How Long Do Ultrasound Results Take?

November 18, 2022

Gynecologist examines results of examination of uterus. Ultrasound diagnostics of pelvic organs

Ultrasound is a medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal organs. It is also known as sonography. Ultrasound is one of the safest, no-risk imaging tests, as it is non-invasive and utilizes no ionizing radiation.

There are many different reasons why your doctor might order an ultrasound. It may be because you have symptoms such as pain or swelling, and the doctor wants to see what could be causing it, or you could be pregnant and the doctor wants to get an image of the developing fetus and determine its size, location, and whether it is developing normally. An ultrasound is also used to stage the pregnancy.

How Is an Ultrasound Test Carried Out?

The ultrasound waves are generated by a transducer, which is placed in contact with the skin. The waves pass through the body and bounce off internal tissues and organs. The echoes are converted into electrical signals, which are then displayed on a screen as images.

What Can An Ultrasound Reveal?

Ultrasound can be used to create an image of many different parts of the body, including the heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, bladder, womb (uterus), ovaries, and fallopian tubes. In addition to monitoring pregnancy, an ultrasound scan can reveal breast lumps and cysts, nodules and cysts within the thyroid gland, abnormal growths and obstructions within and around your kidneys, and show blood flow through the arteries and veins (also called a doppler ultrasound).

How Soon Can You Get the Results of an Ultrasound?

Generally speaking, most ultrasounds will take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete, and in most cases, you are told the results as soon as you finish the scan, but the actual image may need to be analyzed by the radiologist. The written report will be available soon after the test.

What is 3D Ultrasound?

A 3D ultrasound is a medical imaging technique that uses sound waves to create a three-dimensional image of the inside of the body. Unlike a 2D ultrasound, which only produces two-dimensional images, a 3D ultrasound provides more detailed information about the structure and function of organs and other tissues. 3D ultrasounds can provide clear pictures of the baby’s facial features, heart anatomy, and brain development, and greater detail of abnormalities in development.

An ultrasound scan generally carries little or no risk. However, with untrained technicians, the risks can multiply. For this reason, make sure to choose a reputable imaging facility in Jacksonville for your ultrasound test.
